The reason I’m avoiding the R and R

    Hi all,
I’m considering the read and react offense and like a lot of the concepts. I’m a traditional motion guy and find the RR to be similiar to the motion but with a little more control. I thought this might be helpful because of some players just running around and cutting all the time. We teach in the motion to read your defender and flash if they go to double and if they aren’t looking for example. My concern with the RR is that now we take away the flash reads and when for example the ball gets into the corner and say a trap occurs and the filler doesn’t cut and holds up the RR then there aren’t any people flashing/showing to the ball. I’m only on layer pin and skip, so it may be later, but how does the read and react handdle this? I really like the idea of the RR, but… need to clear some stuff up.

There should NEVER be players standing and not cutting after passing. Is the ball going from the wing to the corner ball-Side? If so they are supposed to cut after passing the ball to the corner which has been trained over and over and over. Hope that answers your question? The only time i don’t have a player fill a spot is when we go “YEllow” which means to stay put as guys/Girls are draft driving through a huge gap. Hope that helps?

Coach Dan: The issue you describe is not a problem with the design of the R&R, its one of execution. Your job is to make sure they execute. There is no specific basketball strategy, whether offense, defense, OOB, press, press break, whatever, that works if your players don’t execute. One of the great advantages of the R&R is that it can absorb mistakes, better than other systems.

Thanks for the replies. say a pass goes wing to corner and the wing cuts. The corner gets trapped and they deny the fill coming from the top to the wing. The corner is now within the 5 seccond call and the wing player is late getting there and doesn’t have time to cut and next player fill. Do you have a weakside short corner or wing flash to high post area?

This sounds like a zone question given you are talking about SC participation. If your major concern is being trapped, make sure the SC follows the ball. If they trap the corner, either the SC or the cutter will be open. Spacing is key, as you want to make sure the middle post defender cannot cover two people, which is why I have my SC run behind the basket.

When a teammate is in trouble, like a trap situation, teammates must do whatever it takes to solve the problem. Remind them that the Read & React is a structure-system that keeps the team together until they can learn how to play basketball. Playing basketball is a series of problem-solving actions. Read & React teaches you to solve problems. Do what it takes to solve the problem and then connect together (on the spots) as soon as you can.

      Rhanks Rick,
I like the semi structure concept because we have too many kids just cutting all the time. We teach interchanges and not always a direct basketcut depending on space availbility, cut when defender doubles, 45 flash on baseline drive, etc. Does this allow too much freedom in the read and react?
