I am wondering what instructions coaches give to the player playing in the nail. I have a player that is very effective in the mid-post if we can get her 1o1 and is tall enough to pass well out of the nail.

The most important thing to give them is reps. They need to get tons of live experience catching the ball at the nail. It’s not easy to be an effective player from there because all defenses collapse there in a panic when the ball goes to the nail. Build that player up slowly. I’m sure you started with 5 vs 0 to teach it. Next go shell 5 on 5 where you tell the defense to not touch any passes and the offense not to score. Next run controlled 5 on 5 live where you have the defense go live but you tell the offense that they can’t shoot until a certain action or actions occur, like “Ball must go to the nail 3 times before you can shoot.” This forces the offense to get the ball to the nail but more importantly, at the right time. See, just as important as the nail player being comfortable catching the ball there and making plays, is that the perimeter players need to know when and how to deliver them the ball at the right time and place. Coach them up in this regard. Move on to 5 on 5 live half court, then 5 on 5 from half court transition, and finally, 5 on 5 live full court.
As with most difficult things, break it down into its component parts, slow it down, train, built it up slowly. Invest the time.
